AMA: THE SEQUENCE OF COGNITION

SEQUENCE-FIRST WORKBOOK

at if consciousness is not a single static witness but an ordered sequence?

y does the order of worship reflect the order of knowing?

y are the Kālīs moments of cognition, not just goddesses?

RPOSE

is workbook gives the Krama tradition a logical entry point. It does not ask you to

cept Kashmir Śaiva metaphysics. It reconstructs the questions the system asks, the

swers it proposes, why each concept is introduced, and where the contested inferences

main.

epared as part of the Tantrāloka × Ochema research programme · August 2026

W TO USE THIS WORKBOOK

not read the Krama as goddesses and rituals to memorize. Read it as one escalating

oblem: *if reality is consciousness, and consciousness moves, then what is the order of

at movement — and how do we take part in it?*

Read one unit at a time. The units are cumulative.

Keep three columns: what the text claims / what Ochema translates / what remains unproven.

Do the checkpoints. Conceptual control, not memorization.

Treat every modern comparison as an analogue, never an identity.

Return to the text map only after Units 1–6.

THODOLOGICAL RULE

ver allow a mathematical theorem, neuroscientific model, or contemplative experience to

herit the truth of a metaphysical claim merely because their structures resemble one

other. Translation, analogy, implementation, and identity are four different relations.

E ONE PROBLEM

consciousness that merely was would be a static eye. To act, it must move — and to

ve, it must have an order. The Krama asks: what is the order of consciousness's own

lf-activity, and how do we enter it?

IT 1 — WHAT IS SEQUENCE?

e name of the tradition is its thesis. Krama = "order" / "sequence." But the Krama does

t say that things are ordered; it says that order IS cognition.

1 Sequence is not trivial

e sequence in which consciousness moves is not incidental to what consciousness is. To

ow is to move through an order. The order is not a container for cognition; it is

gnition's very form.

2 The escalating problem

reality is a single consciousness, it cannot be a frozen eye. It must act. But action

plies a before and after. The Krama asks what that order is, and how a finite being takes

rt in it.

3 The sharp distinction

at experience has a temporal flow is a datum. That this flow is the absolute's own

gnition-sequence is the metaphysical claim.

ECKPOINT 1

Why does the Krama claim sequence is cognition, not just order?

What problem does a static-witness model create?

IT 2 — WHY WORSHIP IN ORDER?

1 The pūjā-krama

e perceptible order of worship is the pūjā-krama. The Krama holds that this order

rresponds to — and enacts — the imperceptible sequence of cognition (saṃvit-krama).

2 Ritual as the grammar of knowing

tual is not a performance laid over a static reality. It is the visible grammar of how

nsciousness works: how it emerges, expands, rests, dissolves. The worshipper does not

rform an order; the worshipper enters the order by which consciousness knows itself.

3 The caution

at ritual has a structure is a datum. That this structure is consciousness's own

gnition-sequence is the metaphysical claim.

ECKPOINT 2

What is the pūjā-krama, and what does it correspond to?

How is ritual "the grammar of knowing" rather than a performance?

IT 3 — WHO ARE THE KĀLĪS?

e most esoteric teaching of the tradition is the Doctrine of the Twelve Kālīs. Wenta

ens her study with its importance:

"The Doctrine of the Twelve Kālīs constitutes one of the earliest developments of the

Kālīkula/Kālīkrama. Moreover, it represents the most esoteric teaching in the entire

Kashmiri Śaiva tradition predominant in the Kashmir region in the early medieval period."

— Aleksandra Wenta, *The Twelve Kālīs and Utpaladeva's Appraisal of the Sensory

Experience*

1 Kālīs are moments, not merely goddesses

e Twelve Kālīs are the twelve moments of cognition — the phases through which

nsciousness moves as it knows. The goddess is the personified form of the cognitive

ment.

2 Kālasaṁkarṣaṇī, the crown

"She Who Draws Time to Herself (Kālasaṁkarṣaṇī), the goddess of the Kālīkrama, is Beyond

Parā (Parātīta) of the Trika goddesses... that underline the doctrinal foundation of his

Trika system."

— Wenta, The Twelve Kālīs

e Krama crowns the Trika's triad with a goddess of the very principle of sequence.

3 The deep link to Pratyabhijñā

nta traces the lineage: the Krama teacher Govindarāja → Somānanda → Utpaladeva →

hinavagupta. The Doctrine of the Twelve Kālīs passed down this very chain. Sequence and

cognition are two halves of one insight.

ECKPOINT 3

What are the Twelve Kālīs, and why are they "moments"?

Who is Kālasaṁkarṣaṇī, and why is she "beyond Parā"?

IT 4 — HOW DOES SEQUENCE RELATE TO RECOGNITION?

1 Process and recognition complement

reality is a sequence of cognitive moments, liberation is recognizing oneself as the

hole* sequence — as the Kālīs' return to Kālasaṁkarṣaṇī — rather than as a single moment

staken for a separate self.

2 One insight, two expressions

atyabhijñā says "you are the one consciousness that knows." The Krama says "you are the

dered sequence by which it knows." Both dissolve the separate self; they differ in

ether they accent the static identity or the dynamic order.

3 Wenta's fusion point

nta locates where the Krama and Pratyabhijñā fuse — in the sensory, in devotion:

"Indulgence in the senses entails entering into the highest realization of Śiva's

nature, it is a sudden recognition (sāhasa-abhijñāna)... 'saturated with the pure,

everlastingly flowing stream of the nectar of consciousness (saṁvit-amṛta)'... that

comprises the cognition 'that all is one.'"

— Wenta, The Twelve Kālīs

e sequence of sense-experience, followed to its end, is a recognition.

ECKPOINT 4

How is liberation-as-recognition compatible with liberation-as-sequence?

Where, according to Wenta, do the Krama and Pratyabhijñā fuse?

IT 5 — WHAT IS THE MAHĀNĀYA?

1 Reality as the ever-complete sequence

e Mahānaya ("Great Method") and Mahārtha ("Great Meaning"), in the Mahānayaprakāśa and

hārthamañjarī, read the whole of reality as the ever-present, already-complete

gnition-sequence of the Goddess.

2 Not a ladder to climb

e Mahānaya is a recognition of what is already the case: the sequence of the world is the

ddess's own, complete from the first moment. The Kālīs do not have to be assembled; they

e already one movement.

3 The process-based recognition

is is the process-based equivalent of the recognition thesis: liberation as the

-cognition of an ever-present whole.

ECKPOINT 5

What is the Mahānaya, and why is it "already complete"?

How is the Mahānaya a process-based version of recognition?

IT 6 — HOW IS LIBERATION PROCESS-BASED?

1 Sequence returns to itself

e sequence does not end; it returns. Consciousness emerges, expands, rests, dissolves —

d this very movement, recognized as the whole, is liberation. There is no static "beyond

e sequence"; there is the sequence seen as one complete movement.

2 The lived difference

fore recognition, one is a single moment caught in the flow. After, one is the whole

quence — not still, but complete in motion.

ECKPOINT 6

Why can't liberation be a static escape?

What is the difference between "a moment in the flow" and "the whole sequence"?

IT 7 — WHAT REMAINS UNRESOLVED?

1 The strongest Krama chain

nsciousness moves; movement is ordered; the order is cognition; the Kālīs are its

ments; recognition is the whole.

2 The contested points

e exact number and structure of the Kālī-moments (Twelve vs the Ten of the daśākhaṇḍa);

w far the ritual enacted the cognition; the relation of the Mahānaya to the earlier

līkula texts.

3 What Ochema can contribute

p the cognition-sequence onto the process/dynamism pole; compare with sequential/process

dels of cognition — as correspondence, never identity.

4 What Ochema must not claim yet

at cognitive science "proves" the Kālī-moments, or that the Kālīs "prove" a cognitive

del.

5 Final synthesis

ama supplies the process-based reading: reality as the ordered sequence of cognition. It

lances the static precision of Pratyabhijñā and connects the Kālī-moments to the Goddess

o is their whole.
