ULA: THE REFORMULATION

KULA-FIRST WORKBOOK

at does it mean to belong to a lineage that is also a body and a totality?

y does the Yoginī-cult become a path for householders?

y is initiation (dīkṣā) absolutely required?

RPOSE

is workbook gives the Kaula tradition a logical entry point. It does not ask you to

cept Kashmir Śaiva metaphysics. It reconstructs the questions the system asks, the

swers it proposes, why each concept is introduced, and where the contested inferences

main.

epared as part of the Tantrāloka × Ochema research programme · August 2026

W TO USE THIS WORKBOOK

not read the Kaula texts as practices to memorize. Read it as one escalating problem:

f the Goddess-cult's power is bound to lineage and body, how can it become a path for

dinary householders?*

Read one unit at a time. The units are cumulative.

Keep three columns: what the text claims / what Ochema translates / what remains unproven.

Do the checkpoints. Conceptual control, not memorization.

Treat every modern comparison as an analogue, never an identity.

Return to the text map only after Units 1–6.

THODOLOGICAL RULE

ver allow a mathematical theorem, neuroscientific model, or contemplative experience to

herit the truth of a metaphysical claim merely because their structures resemble one

other. Translation, analogy, implementation, and identity are four different relations.

E ONE PROBLEM

e Goddess-cult's power is bound to lineage and body. The Kaula asks how that power can

come a path for householders — and answers by showing that lineage IS body IS totality.

IT 1 — WHAT IS KULA?

la is the tradition's signature and its most slippery term. The dossier records its

earest documented semantic shift in the whole corpus.

1 The sense-trajectory

Early Yoginī/Kaula: family/lineage of Yoginīs or Mothers (a socio-mythic classification).

Developed Kaula: body; totality of power and phenomena (a deliberate homonym-extension).

Kubjikā: the mantra-body (mantradeha) — the resulting body is kulātmaka.

Abhinava/Trika: the manifest pole vs the transcendent akula.

2 The one term, many senses

la cannot be flattened to "family." It is the semantic chameleon of the corpus: lineage,

dy, totality, the manifest pole. The translation-policy retains "Kula" when the whole

chnical system is active, and warns: never auto-translate as "family."

3 The escalating problem

e Kaula's core move is the extension of the Yoginī-lineage sense of kula toward the body

d the totality. What does it mean that the lineage IS the body IS the totality?

ECKPOINT 1

What are the four senses of kula, and which is the Kaula's signature?

Why must kula never be auto-translated as "family"?

IT 2 — WHAT IS THE KAULA?

1 The reformulation

e Kaula is the reformulation of the Yoginī-cult traditions into a domesticated path for

useholders. It preserves the lineage-family sense of kula while deliberately extending it

ward the body, power, and totality.

2 The bundle

e Matsyendra-bundle — Kaulajñānanirṇaya (KJN), Akulavīra, Jñānakārikā — is its

ripture. The KJN gives the lineage-body:

sarvavyāpī nirañjanaḥ — "the pervasive, the stain-free" — the lotus above the

cakra-arithmetic, the kula's transcendent terminus.

— Kaulajñānanirṇaya (via the dossier)

3 Not a rejection, a domestication

e Kaula does not reject the Yoginī-cult; it makes its power accessible to householders.

e vāma-mārga is defended, not abolished; the dīkṣā-theology is built.

ECKPOINT 2

What does "domestication" mean here — rejection or extension?

What is the Matsyendra-bundle, and why is it the Kaula's scripture?

IT 3 — WHAT IS THE VĀMA/DAKṢIṆA PATH?

1 The path-discrimination

e Kaula distinguishes the vāma-mārga (the "left-hand" path) from the dakṣiṇa (right).

is is not a ritual preference; it is a theological discrimination about which practices

d attitudes constitute the path.

2 The defended left-hand path

e Kaula defends the vāma-mārga: the use of the very energies (sense, body, desire) that

dinary paths reject. The power is not in rejecting the body but in transmuting the kula —

e body/totality — into the path.

3 The caution

at the Kaula uses the left-hand register is a datum. What it means metaphysically is the

adition's claim.

ECKPOINT 3

What does the vāma/dakṣiṇa distinction mark?

Why does the Kaula defend the left-hand path rather than abolish it?

IT 4 — WHY IS DĪKṢĀ REQUIRED?

1 The ear-to-ear transmission

sākṣāt paraśivaṃ karṇāt karṇagataṃ kulam —

"the kula, gone from ear to ear, is directly the supreme Śiva."

— Kaularahasya 1.17 (our T1)

e lineage is not information that can be read from a book. It is a transmission that

sses from guru to disciple — an initiation.

2 Dīkṣā as absolutely required

itiation is not optional. The dīkṣā-theology holds that without transmission the power of

e kula cannot be activated. This is why the Kaula, unlike a merely philosophical school,

inseparable from lineage.

3 The caution

at lineage confers access is the tradition's claim — a claim about transmission, not

stable by an observer.

ECKPOINT 4

What does "gone from ear to ear" reveal about the kula?

Why is dīkṣā absolutely required?

IT 5 — WHY IS THE KAULA THE CROWN?

1 "Nothing beyond the Kaula"

e Kulapradīpa gives the path-hierarchy ending in the claim:

kaulāt parataraṃ na hi — "nothing is beyond the Kaula."

— Kulapradīpa (via our T1)

2 The claim's meaning

e Kaula is not one path among many; it is the summit of the paths. The path that uses the

dy and totality is not lower than the path that rejects them; it is higher, because it

s integrated them.

ECKPOINT 5

What does "kaulāt parataraṃ na hi" claim?

Why is the integrating path held to be higher than the rejecting path?

IT 6 — HOW DOES THIS DIFFER FROM THE TRIKA?

1 A directional āmnāya vs a calibration layer

e atlas models the Kaula as a directional Kaula āmnāya — a tradition with its own

neage, ritual, and dīkṣā. The Trika is modeled as the calibration layer, whose Tantrāloka

pplies the doctrinal vocabulary for the whole corpus.

2 Kula vs the triad

e Kaula centers kula (lineage/body/totality); the Trika centers the triad (Parā, Parāparā,

arā) and the tattvas.

3 The relation

ey are not competitors but different registers: the Trika is the conceptual Rosetta

yer; the Kaula is the lived, transmitted, embodied path.

ECKPOINT 6

How is the Kaula a "directional āmnāya" different from the Trika's "calibration"?

What does the Kaula's kula add that the Trika's triad does not accent?

IT 7 — WHAT REMAINS UNRESOLVED?

1 The strongest Kaula chain

la is lineage/body/totality; the Kaula transmits it; transmission requires dīkṣā; the

tegrated path is the crown. The chain is coherent and textually anchored (KJN, KRH, KPD).

2 The contested points

e obscurity of the bundle (much of the KJN and the Akulavīra remains understudied); the

lation of the Kaula to the later Trika synthesis; the exact force of the vāma practices.

3 What Ochema can contribute

p the kula-concept onto the grid (the lineage/body/totality extension is a clear

mantic-shift case); compare the embodied-path claim with modern work on embodiment — as

rrespondence, never identity.

4 What Ochema must not claim yet

at modern embodiment-science "proves" the Kaula's dīkṣā-theology, or that the Kaula

roves" a scientific model.

5 Final synthesis

e Kaula is the reformulation-node: the Yoginī-cult's power made a householder's path, the

ma-mārga defended, the dīkṣā-theology built. Its signature is kula — the insight that

neage, body, and totality are one, and that the integrated path is the crown.
