- w Fragments of the Īśvarapratyabhijñā-vivr̥ti1
- hei Kawajiri
- troduction
- e Pratyabhijñā school is named after the work of Utpaladeva (c.
- 5-75) who is a disciple of Somānanda (c. 900-50), though Somānanda is
- cognized as the founder of the Pratyabhijñā school. According to
- dhurāja (c. 1000-50) who was from south India and travelled to Kashmir
- become a disciple of Abhinavagupta (c. 975–1025), the following works
- e regarded as the authoritative Pratyabhijñā texts:2
- Īśvarapratyabhijñā-kārikā (ĪPK) of Utpaladeva
- Īśvarapratyabhijñā-vr̥tti (ĪPVr̥) of Utpaladeva
- Īśvarapratyabhijñā-vivr̥ti/ṭīkā (ĪPViv) of Utpaladeva
- Īśvarapratyabhijñā-vimarśinī (ĪPV) of Abhinavagupta
- Īśvarapratyabhijñā-vivr̥ti-vimarśinī (ĪPVV) of Abhinavagupta
- e ĪPViv is a commentary on the ĪPK and ĪPVr̥, both of which are written
- the same time. The ĪPV and the ĪPVV are commentaries on the ĪPK and
- e ĪPViv, respectively. Among these, the ĪPViv is only extant in a
- agmentary form. After Torella published an article on the ĪPViv in
- 88, he recently edited a part of the ĪPViv in his articles.3 His
- ition is based on a transcript copied by K.C. Pandey himself and the
- iginal of it. The original manuscript written in Śāradā script (Skt.
- No. 30) was discovered in the National Archives of India, New Delhi.4
- contains the part of the ĪPViv relative to ĪPK1.3.6-1.5.3 and the
- troduction to ĪPK 1.5.4-5.
- present, this is a unique manuscript of the ĪPViv, though so
- agmentary. Except this part of the ĪPViv edited by Torella, one can
- ean some passages of the ĪPViv not only from the works of
- hinavagupta and Kṣemarāja but also from the footnotes of the KSTS
- ition of the ĪPV.5 According to Torella (2007c: 479, fn. 8), those
- otnotes must have been in the margin of a manuscript of the ĪPV, that
- ven the siglum Gh in the edition of the ĪPV.6
- the course of search for the manuscripts of the Pratyabhijñā works, I
- quired photocopies of a manuscript of the ĪPK along with the ĪPVr̥ (ms
- . 4408) kept in the Akhila Bhāratīya Saṁskrit Parishad, Lucknow.7 This
- nuscript is written in Devanāgarī script and contains marginal notes
- re and there. I began examining them. Very soon, I realized that some
- ssages in the margin are from the ĪPViv, by means of collating them
- th the already edited text of the ĪPViv, and expected that there would
- new fragments of the ĪPViv in the margin. With reference to this
- nuscript, it is noteworthy that most of the passages in the margin are
- om the Pratyabhijñā texts. A scribe of this manuscript seems to
- nfine himself to add his own comments.
- this paper, I will present new fragments of the ĪPViv. This paper is
- voted to the diplomatic edition of the new fragments of the ĪPViv
- lative to ĪPK1.1.1-1.5.3.
- itorial signs in the apparatus and the diplomatic edition
- the reading of the edition by Torella
- illegible akṣara(s) or part of an akṣara due, e.g. to blurring
- lacunae in the manuscript
- > contain added akṣara(s) in the manuscript (the position is indicated
- the margin)
- ] contain unclear akṣara(s) or part of an akṣara that is unclear due,
- g., to blurring
- } contain akṣara(s) deleted in the manuscript
- sign of insertion added above the line
- sign of insertion added below the line
- agments Corresponding to Torella’s Edition
- a beginning, we will examine the passages of the ĪPViv in the
- nuscript with the help of the edition of the ĪPViv. Though there are
- so passages from the ĪPV and so on in the margin, they are not given
- re since they are not in question.

- Torella pointed out, another part of the ĪPViv which contains the

- w Fragments
- we have seen, there are a number of passages of the ĪPViv in the
- rgin of the manuscript kept in the Akhila Bhāratīya Sanskrit Parishad.
- w let us turn to the marginal notes which are not identified with
- ready edited texts of the Pratyabhijñā works.

- ncluding Remark
- have seen:
- in the manuscript of the ĪPK preserved in Lucknow, a number of
- cerpts from the ĪPViv are found;
- new fragments of the ĪPViv are found;
- they are mainly from the avataraṇikā of the ĪPViv to the ĪPK; and
- with reference to the part of the ĪPViv edited by Torella, the
- agments of this manuscript give not only the avataraṇikā but also part
- the commentary for the ĪPK and ĪPVr̥.
- is true that a part of the text of the ĪPViv has been transmitted in
- rth Indian manuscripts, but it is unlikely that the full text of the
- Viv has been transmitted there. At least, the scribe of this
- nuscript did not have it. For, if he had known of it, he would have
- ven the part of the commentary for the ĪPK as well as the avataraṇikā
- the ĪPViv with reference to the part of the ĪPViv which are not
- ited.
- vertheless, what is important here is that we can glean the new
- agments of the ĪPViv from this manuscript. We should notice the
- rginal notes of this manuscript not only from the aspect of gleaning
- em but also from the aspect of the manuscript transmission of the
- atyabhijñā texts. It is urgent that we should examine the rest of the
- rginal notes in this manuscript.

- For further details of this manuscript, see Torella 2007a.
- They are sometimes introduced by the expression yathoktam
- ṭasāhasryām.
- This manuscript is now preserved in the National Archives of India,
- w Delhi (Skt. ms No. 5).
- For a critical edition of the ĪPK, this manuscript is not used by
- rella. See Torella 2002: xlvi-liv.
- -viviṣaye in this fragment is a scribal error for -viṣaye.
- In this fragment, an akṣara ha after tadā seems to be dropped.
- Torella follows Abhinavagupta’s reading, though the manuscript of the
- Viv as well as this fragment has the reading yujyate. See ĪPVV I 273,
- . 6-7: tad etat tātparyam avatāraṇikāyām āha yujyeta iti hetuhetumator
- ṅā ।
- na cetyādi in this fragment should be corrected to na ced ityādi,

- raṁ vartamānā ity āha śaktiyogalakṣaṇaṁ ca iti ।
- An akṣara nā after vi seems to be dropped.
- aindriyakānām in this fragment is a scribal error for aindriyakāṇām.
- śeṣapadārthajñānānām in this fragment should be emended to
- eṣapadārthajñānām,
- According to Torella (2007a: 480 fnn. 38, 39), the footnote 71 of the
- V I 110 is based on a marginal note found in one of the manuscripts of
- e ĪPV which is used for the KSTS edition. The text as quoted in the
- V manuscript has vicitrecchāprabodhitā-, while this fragment does
- citrecchāpratibodhitā-.
- -vikalparūpavikalparūpa- is a scribal error for -vikalparūpa-.
- -pratikṣepapatvāt is a scribal error for -pratikṣepaparatvāt.
- nirūpayinn is a scribal error for nirūpayiṣyann.
- The text as quoted in the footnote 17 of the ĪPV I 115 has
- ānaprakaraṇenānena.
- Or, it may be that, in the ĪPVV, Abhinavagupta analysed tattat in
- ttattathānirmita- into tena te, and then said in other words, namely,
- dhena and anubhūyamānāḥ. If so, tattat does not mean “various”, but
- objects] which are being directly perceived (anubhūyamāna) by
- rception (bodha).” See ĪPVV II 5, ll. 10-14: tena iti bodhena । te iti
- ubhūyamānāḥ । tathā iti svarūpād avibhaktā api

- rella 2007b: 544, fn 18
- Torella corrects -nirdeśasya in the manuscript of the ĪPViv to
- irdeśyasya, which is supported by the ĪPVV. In the ĪPVV, Abhinavagupta
- raphrases nirdeśya as parāmr̥śya. See ĪPVV II 19, ll. 9-10: ata eva tad
- y anena vapuṣā parāmr̥śyo yo ’rthaḥ, tasya sāmarthyād iti . . . ।
- See ĪPVV II 19, ll. 7-9: smr̥tirūpaparāmarśe

- hito ’pi bahir iti saṁvidbhāgāt vyatiriktatvena ahantāvibhaktaḥ . . .
- Both the manuscript of the ĪPViv and this fragment have the reading
- oga-. However, as Torella pointed out, the detailed comments of
- hinavagupta refer to the reading ābhoga-. See ĪPVV II 25, ll. 20-23: ā
- mantāt bhogaḥ saṁvedanāntarbruḍitānantabhāvasaṁskāramadhyanimagnasya
- dbhāvasya unmeṣanātmakapālanacarvaṇavyāpāro ’nveṣaṇātmā, ābhōgaś
- ntāsantatilakṣaṇaṁ prāṇidhānam ।
- The footnote 62 of the ĪPV I 124 reads as follows: yathoktaṁ
- dhyapratyabhijñāyāṁ arthitāvaśāt smr̥tāv upajāyamānāyāṁ
- aṭādyābhāsasyaiva kāñcanādyābhāsasaṁbhinnasyāpi yathopayogaṁ

- hogavaśena smr̥tāv upajātāyāṁ ghaṭādyābhāsasyaiva
- ñcanādyābhāsāsambhinnasyāpi yathopayogaṁ
- rvadeśakālābhāsādyavacchedoparāgāt svalakṣaṇarūpasya smaraṇād asphuṭo
- āv avabhāso bhavati । tad āha kadācit tu iti । With regard to
- ajātāyām/upajāyamānāyām, this fragment seems to have the reading
- ajāyamānāyām. See Torella 2007b: 547, fn. 44.
- Torella corrects -sambhinnasyāpi in the manuscript of the ĪPViv to
- sambhinnasyāpi, which is supported by this fragment. See Torella
- 07b: 547, fn. 46.
- Torella’s conjectural emendation for -ādhāna- in the manuscript of
- e ĪPViv is supported by this fragment.
- It reads as follows: yathoktam aṣṭasahasryām kadācit punar
- yantaikarasādhānodyuktasya
- ravaśeṣaviśeṣaṇāvabhāsasāmā-nādhikaraṇyāpattiviśadīkr̥taḥ smaryamāṇo
- thaḥ sākṣātkāramaya eva sphuṭam puraḥ sphurati . . .

- vadbhir ābhāsaiḥ pūrṇo ’rthaḥ pratyabhāsiṣṭa, tāvadbhir eva smaryate
- dā ।
- The reading smr̥tikāle is Torella’s conjectural emendation for
- ūtakāle in the manuscript of the ĪPViv. This conjectural emendation is
- pported by the ĪPVV. See ĪPVV II 33, l. 13: tad avatārayati saṁkṣepeṇa
- r̥tikāle ca iti ।
- The reading vārtamānika- is Torella’s conjectural emendation for
- numānika- in the manuscript of the ĪPViv. This conjectural emendation
- supported by this fragment.
- The reading ekatvam is Torella’s conjectural emendation for ekataram
- the manuscript of the ĪPViv. This conjectural emendation is supported
- this fragment.
- praṣṭāram is a scribal error for draṣṭāram.
- The reading smartāraṁ is Torella’s conjectural emendation for
- rtāraṁ in the manuscript of the ĪPViv. This fragment has the reading
- rtāram.
- The reading aparaḥ is Torella’s conjectural emendation for apara- in
- e manuscript of the ĪPViv. This fragment has the same reading apara-
- the manuscript of the ĪPViv.
- The reading -grāhakāṁśā- is Torella’s emendation for -grāhakāṁ cā- in
- e manuscript of the ĪPViv. This emendation is supported by this
- agment.
- The reading iti is Torella’s conjectural addition. anubhūvam is a
- ribal error for anvabhūvam.
- The reading jñānāntaragrāhyatve is Torella’s conjectural emendation
- r jñānāntarāgrāhyatve in the manuscript of the ĪPViv. This conjectural
- endation is supported by this fragment.
- The reading prāguktanityā which Torella’s edition has, being a simple
- po, is corrected to prāguktanītyā as given in the ĪPVV. See ĪPVV II
- , ll. 22–24: prāguktanītyā iti dr̥k svābhāsaiva . . . । (ĪPK1.3.2)
- yādyuktenanyāyena ।
- In Torella 2007c: 484, Torella had made two emendations (addition of
- before vedyavedakabhāvo; bhavanti instead of bhavati). However, these
- endations are withdrawn in Torella 2012: 295, fn. 58.
- Subsequently, Torella 2012: 295, fn. 58 has adopted the reading
- avatīti.
- pramātrā, not found in the manuscript of the ĪPViv, is restored by
- rella.
- The reading -vedakatvam is Torella's conjectural emendation for
- edanam in the manuscript of the ĪPViv. See ĪPVV II 47, ll. 10-11:
- ttvam iti vivr̥ṇoti paramātmavedakam ity anena । tattvaṁ
- ramātmavedakatvam ity arthaḥ ।
- Changing his view with respect to Torella 2007c, Torella is convinced
- at the reading parātmatāpattir eva iti is the correct one. See Torella
- 12: 290, fn. 43.
- Abhinavagupta seems to have a partly different text which contains
- vat. Or, the text Abhinavagupta had in front of him may have had the
- ading yāvat instead of yāpī- found in the manuscript of the ĪPViv and
- is fragment. See ĪPVV II 53, l. 17: yāvat iti yadety arthaḥ ।
- The reading taddarśanopasarjanam is Torella’s tentative restoration
- r tasya darśanasya in the manuscript of the ĪPViv.
- See ĪPV I 142, fn. 141: idam atra punaḥ saṁkṣepeṇa tātparyam
- atyakṣadr̥ṣṭapātināpi parāmarśena darśanasyāhaṁkārāspadasyaiva
- rāmarśa iti ।
- The reading idantādirdeśenaiva found in this fragment is a scribal
- ror for idantānirdeśenaiva. The edition of the ĪPVV has the reading
- antānirdeśena vā. See ĪPVV II 55, ll. 8–9: idantānirdeśena vā iti
- rśanaṁ prarāmr̥śyate [sic] iti saṁbandhaḥ ।
- See ĪPV I 143, fn. 148: ahaṁ paśyāmi iti hi asmacchabdaprayogaṁ
- nāpi iti ।
- If Utpaladeva quotes the ĪPVr̥ here, the reading māyākr̥tavicchedāv iti
- ould be corrected to māyākr̥tavicchinnetyādi given in this fragment. It
- , however, to be noted that Abhinavagupta seems to have a partly
- fferent text of the ĪPVr̥ which reads māyākr̥tavicchedau instead of
- yākr̥tavicchināvabhāsau. See ĪPVr̥ 1.4.8: . . .
- yākr̥tavicchinnāvabhāsāv api prakāśete ।। and ĪPVV II 62, ll. 19-20:
- nu māyākr̥tavicchedāv iti yad uktaṁ, tena bhagavata eva māyāyogāt
- linyaṁ syāt ।
- Though Torella had given the reading -ābhāsasyaikaparidr̥śyamāna- in
- rella 2007d, he kindly informed me (personal communication, 19 August
- 13) that his manuscript did have the reading
- bhāsakramasyaikaparidr̥śyamāna-. In fact, Abhinavagupta seems to have
- e reading -ābhāsakramasyaikaparidr̥śyamāna- instead of
- bhāsasyaikaparidr̥śyamāna-. See ĪPVV II 82: tam avatārayati atha matam
