Materially Enacted Inexternalist Process Identity Theory
A Joint Physical–Phenomenal Theory of Conscious-Subject Individuation
Abstract
- externalist Process Identity Theory (IPIT) holds that each conscious subject is numerically identical to one concrete, temporally extended, materially enacted biological process. The theory rejects both substance dualism and substrate-neutral functionalism. It distinguishes four questions — existence of phenomenality, individuation of subjects, phenomenal structure, and physical implementation — and addresses them through a token-identity claim constrained by empirical structural correspondences.
- e central revision developed here concerns subject individuation. A conscious bearer cannot be selected from physical event structure by a single scalar, maximality rule, geometric form, or privileged coarse-graining. Physical systems admit many overlapping decompositions; biological organization occurs at nested scales. The theory therefore replaces the search for a purely physical selector with a Joint Individuation Principle: a subject-bearing process is the unique equivalence class, if one exists, on which independently justified physical descriptions and independently characterized phenomenal structures converge.
- e physical side is constrained by organizational closure, material enactment, causal emergence, historical continuity, metastability, and perturbational invariance. The phenomenal side is constrained by unity, privacy, temporality, qualitative structure, valence, agency, and indexical presentation. A valid psychophysical partition must be dynamically stable, generating, interventionally robust, and structurally adequate to both domains.
- nsciousness itself is not derived from information, complexity, or biological closure. Phenomenality remains primitive in the minimal theory, while its concrete bearer and structure are empirically investigable.
1. The Problem
- ur questions must be separated. Conflating them has produced a century of confused debate.
1.1 Existence
- y is anything phenomenally manifest rather than nothing?
1.2 Individuation
- y does one phenomenal field belong to one subject rather than another? This is the selector problem (Λₚ).
1.3 Structure
- y does that field possess its particular unity, temporal organization, qualities, valence, agency, and privacy?
1.4 Implementation
- ich physical organization constitutes that field?
- e present theory does not claim that answering (1.4) automatically answers (1.1). Manifestness is treated as primitive. The theory's contribution is to (1.2), (1.3), and (1.4) — showing that they are one problem solved by one operation.
2. The Failure of Purely Physical Selectors
- ery previous attempt to derive the subject from physics alone has failed. The reason is structural, not contingent.
2.1 Why scalar measures fail
- t the total physical history be:
- `
- = (X, Φ, 𝒰)
- `
- purely physical selector would be:
- `
- phys: 𝒫 → {A₁, A₂, ...}
- `
- ery proposal imports arbitrary choices:
- Integration measures require variables and partitions
- Thresholds require cutoffs
- Maximality requires a comparison class
- Causal models require interventions
- Dynamical modes require operators
- Temporal windows require endpoints
- Biological closure permits nested closures
2.2 The underdetermination theorem
- ysical data alone underdetermine which organization is the phenomenal subject. This is not a temporary mathematical inconvenience. It follows from the theory's epistemic asymmetry: phenomenal subjecthood is not a variable contained within any exclusively extrinsic description.
- Corollary:** The demand that physics first identify the subject without phenomenal evidence was misplaced.
3. The Core Identity Thesis
3.1 Postulate
- t D_i denote one phenomenal subject-history and A_i denote one concrete materially enacted process.
- `
- i ≡_int A_i
- `
- ere ≡_int means numerical identity under epistemically asymmetric access.
3.2 What this does not mean
- t production: A_i → D_i. Not correlation: A_i ↔ D_i.
- e same token is:
- Extrinsically describable through causal, biological, and behavioral relations
- Intrinsically present as one phenomenal trajectory
3.3 The epistemic gap
- ird-person propositions do not contain first-person presentation:
- `
- ⊬ P
- `
- t non-derivability does not entail ontological distinctness:
- `
- ⊬ P ;⇏; E ≠ P
- `
- e identity claim is a metaphysical postulate constrained by empirical structural correspondences.
4. Information Is Not the Substrate
- e Information Philosopher distinguishes intrinsic information from information about external relations and proposes that identity depends on the total information associated with an entity. This is suggestive but cannot serve as IPIT's criterion of identity.
- ree problems arise.
- First:** "Total information" depends on the state variables, coding scheme, precision, and observer's partition. It does not provide a unique natural quantity for an organism.
- Second:** Two time-slices of one organism contain different information. Numerical persistence cannot require complete informational equality.
- Third:** Information is not an additional material substance. Shannon information measures distinctions relative to a probability distribution; semantic or functional information requires further organizational and normative conditions.
- IT therefore adopts:
- `
- formation is a property of organized physical distinctions
- `
- t:
- `
- nd is an immaterial information substance
- `
- e physically relevant units are constraint-bearing states with measurable causal consequences.
5. The Solution: Exclusion as Partition
5.1 The source text
- varapratyabhijñā-Kārikā 1.3.7 (Utpaladeva, c. 925 CE):
syād ekaś cidvapur jñānasmr̥tyapohanaśaktimān
"There is one conscious embodied being, possessing the powers of
knowledge, memory, and exclusion [apohana]."
- ree powers are listed as co-equal. The third — apohana (exclusion) — is the partition operation.
5.2 The formal operation
- t Ω be the space of all possible determinations. The exclusion operator E_i for process A_i simultaneously carves subject and world:
- `
- i: Ω → (P_i, W_i)
- `
- ere:
- P_i = the subject pole ("I")
- W_i = the world pole ("this")
5.3 Co-emergence
- i and W_i are not independently pre-existing. They co-emerge through the same exclusion:
- `
- ∃P_i prior to E_i) ∧ ¬(∃W_i prior to E_i)
- `
5.4 The five dimensions of exclusion
- e five kañcukas (Abhinavagupta) are specific exclusion operators that implement E_i:
- Operator | Excludes | Subject Pole | World Pole |
- --|---|---|---|
- Kalā | Actions not available | What I can do | What world resists |
- Vidyā | Distinctions not accessible | What I know | What world is |
- Rāga | States not fulfilled | What I want | What world offers |
- Kāla | Times not present | When I am | Temporal structure |
- Niyati | Locations not reachable | Where I am | Spatial structure |
5.5 What this solves
- e partition problem: content X belongs to field D_i not because of an additional wall, but because the SAME exclusion operation E_i that determined X as content simultaneously determined D_i as its field. They are two poles of one act.
6. Physical Implementation: The Bioelectric Substrate
6.1 Levin's empirical program
- chael Levin (2010-2025) has demonstrated that:
- Bioelectric networks (Vmem distribution, gap junction coupling, ion channel states) store morphogenetic target information
- This information persists through complete cellular turnover (planaria regenerate to stored targets after amputation)
- The bioelectric field implements downward causation: organism-level goals constrain individual cell behavior
- Gap junction coupling determines the "cognitive light cone" — the spatial/temporal scale of agency
6.2 The mapping
- e exclusion operators E_i are physically implemented by the bioelectric field B_i:
- Exclusion | Physical Implementation |
- --|---|
- What signals enter (include) | Gap junctions open → coupled |
- What stays out (exclude) | Gap junctions closed → decoupled |
- What the system targets | Vmem distribution → morphogenetic attractor |
- What the system can affect | Cognitive light cone → spatial/temporal reach |
6.3 Material enactment
- e bioelectric field is not an abstract pattern. It depends constitutively on:
- `
- i = ⟨W_i, I_i, L_i, P_i, C_i, E_i, M_i⟩
- `
- ere W_i is hydration state, I_i ionic composition, L_i lipid membranes, P_i proteins and channels, C_i cytoskeleton, E_i extracellular matrix, M_i metabolism.
- anging any of these changes what can be computed (Fields & Levin, 2103.17061; Cadinu et al., 2504.00872).
7. The Joint Individuation Principle
7.1 Physical model family
- fine a physical model family:
- `
- = {R^N, R^B, R^M, R^A, R^S}
- `
- cluding neural, bioelectric, metabolic, autonomic, and sensorimotor descriptions.
- ch model recovers candidate organizations:
- `
- c(R^k) = {A₁^k, A₂^k, ...}
- `
7.2 Phenomenal constraints
- t 𝕻_i be the family of phenomenal partitions supported by first-person discrimination, structured reports, psychophysics, and behavior.
7.3 The joint fixed point
- subject-bearing process is a joint fixed point:
- `
- i* = Fix(𝕽, 𝕻_i, 𝓤)
- `
- en the same process-equivalence class jointly satisfies:
- Organizational closure — reciprocal constraint maintenance
- Material enactment — substrate-specific dynamics
- Historical continuity — active retention of prior states
- Causal-scale robustness — stable across resolution changes
- Dynamically stable psychophysical partition — generating, intervention-invariant
- Perturbational correspondence — equivalent interventions produce corresponding changes
- Cross-description convergence — independent models recover same class
7.4 The identity claim
- `
- i ≡_int A_i*
- `
8. Structural Bridge Hypotheses
- ch phenomenal dimension maps to a physical structure:
- Phenomenal | Physical | Status |
- --|---|---|
- Unity (u_i) | Differentiated integration under perturbation | Supported |
- Boundary (b_i) | Convergence of neural, bioelectric, metabolic, mechanical boundaries | Testable |
- Temporality (τ_i) | Active retention and anticipation (H_i) | Supported |
- Quality (q_i) | Relational physical structure compared via similarity data | Testable |
- Valence (v_i) | Regulatory significance enacted through norm structure | Hypothesized |
- Agency (a_i) | Counterfactual control over future states | Supported |
- Subject index (ι_i) | Historical, regulatory, perspective-bearing trajectory invariant | Hypothesized |
8.1 The subject index
- stinguish explicit ownership (o_i) from implicit subject index (ι_i):
- `
- i ≠ o_i
- `
- plicit mineness can weaken in depersonalization or meditation. Experience remains indexed to one field. The subject index denotes the invariance by which changing contents are co-present within one private trajectory.
9. Predictions
P1: Joint models outperform one-domain models
- dels using only neural integration or only biological closure should individuate subjects less reliably than models combining physical organization with phenomenal partition constraints.
P2: Generating partitions predict phenomenology
- rtitions that are dynamically stable and approximately generating should predict phenomenal transitions better than arbitrary clustering with similar statistical fit.
P3: Subject-index continuity exceeds content continuity
- ring large content changes, the organization corresponding to ι_i should remain more stable than content-specific neural patterns.
P4: Ownership dissociates from indexing
- rturbations of explicit ownership should alter o_i without necessarily abolishing ι_i, unity, or phenomenal presence.
P5: Organizational closure is necessary but insufficient
- ny autonomous biological systems should satisfy closure without satisfying the complete psychophysical convergence conditions.
P6: History improves bearer recovery
- story-sensitive models should outperform instantaneous models in predicting temporal continuity, familiarity, agency, affect, and subject-boundary changes.
P7: No single material variable is sufficient
- dration, membrane voltage, synchrony, information quantity, and complexity should each fail as independent selectors while contributing to the joint process model.
P8: Robust scale plateau
- e candidate bearer should be recovered across a range of nearby spatial and temporal scales rather than at one fragile analytical resolution.
10. Falsification Conditions
- IT would be seriously weakened if:
- No physical model family converges on a common process-equivalence class
- Stable phenomenal partitions cannot be mapped to stable physical partitions
- Arbitrary partitions predict phenomenology as well as generating partitions
- Candidate boundaries change radically under minor analytical alterations
- Organizational closure and causal-scale robustness provide no predictive improvement
- Historical variables add no explanatory value
- Phenomenal unity and privacy track several incompatible overlapping processes equally well
- Physical destruction of the recovered process leaves the same phenomenal trajectory intact
- The proposed subject-index invariant shows no physical or phenomenological stability
11. What Is Established vs. What Remains Open
Established
- Problem | Solution | Source |
- --|---|---|
- Substrate | The bearer is a materially enacted biological process, not abstract software or a single substance | Levin 2103.17061, 2504.00872; MEPIT |
- Persistence | Identity is continuity of a history-bearing organizational process under transformation, not material sameness | Fuller: pattern integrity; Levin: planaria regeneration |
- Boundary | The relevant boundary is convergence among several dynamically generated physical boundaries, constrained by phenomenal privacy | MEPIT: ∂A_i vector; Levin: cognitive light cone |
- Coarse-graining | Higher-level partitions are selected through contextual stability, generating dynamics, causal robustness, and phenomenal adequacy | Ellis: contextual emergence; Doyle: adequate determinism |
- Selector | Replaced by joint individuation fixed point; a purely physical selector was an inappropriate demand for an identity theory with epistemically asymmetric access | This work |
- Self | The theory distinguishes phenomenal presence, implicit subject indexing, explicit ownership, and autobiographical self-model. No separate owner required. | This work |
- Information | Information is not a ghostly substance. It is physically enacted distinction, constraint, and causal organization. | Doyle (corrected) |
- Partition (apoha) | E_i: Ω → (P_i, W_i). One operation carves subject and world simultaneously. | ĪPK 1.3.7; Torella reconstruction |
Open
- Question | Status |
- --|---|
- Why is the jointly individuated process phenomenally manifest? | Primitive postulate |
- Can structural convergence prove numerical identity deductively? | No — abductive |
- Do nonhuman and artificial systems satisfy the criteria? | Must be applied, not decided by intuition |
- What are the exact operational metrics for closure, partition quality, boundary convergence, and phenomenal structural fit? | Research problems |
12. Final Theory Statement
Materially Enacted Inexternalist Process Identity Theory holds that each conscious subject is numerically identical to one materially enacted, temporally extended, history-bearing process. This bearer is an organizationally closed but thermodynamically open network of mutually maintaining constraints whose neural, bioelectric, metabolic, mechanical, autonomic, and sensorimotor activities jointly preserve one trajectory. Because physical systems admit multiple nested and overlapping descriptions, subject individuation cannot be derived from extrinsic physics alone. The bearer is recovered as a joint fixed point at which independent physical models, causal-scale analyses, dynamically stable generating partitions, perturbational evidence, and independently characterized phenomenal structures converge on one process-equivalence class.
Phenomenal presence, unity, privacy, temporality, quality, valence, agency, ownership, and implicit subject indexing are intrinsic structural dimensions of that same process. Information, complexity, integration, biological closure, and hydration are neither separate mental substances nor individually sufficient conditions. The existence of manifestness remains primitive; its bearer, boundaries, persistence, and internal structure are empirically investigable.
