WHY RECOGNITION IS A FELT RE-COGNITION
The mechanism of recognition in the IPVV — the σ-flip, the three registers, and why the change must be felt
- 026-08-11. The thesis is that recognition is a felt re-cognition. Why "felt"? Why "re-"cognition?
- is essay answers both by expounding the mechanism the IPVV actually gives. Recognition is a
- -cognition because it is the return of a self that was never absent ("I was never not"); it is felt
- cause the change it makes — the σ-flip, the re-positioning of the self from a thing among things to
- e primary thing — is experienced as a savouring, a camatkāra. This essay reconstructs the mechanism
- actly: what changes, what does not, and why the change must be felt. It is the mechanism-essay, the
- ow it actually works" of the recognition-thesis.*
1. The two questions
- e thesis makes two claims that need explaining:
- Re-cognition. Why "re-"? If the self was never absent, what is recognized again?
- Felt. Why felt? If recognition changes positioning, not content, why is the change experienced
- a savouring?
- e IPVV answers both, and the answers turn out to be the same mechanism — the σ-flip — seen from two
- des. This essay expounds that mechanism in full.
2. The mechanism: the σ-flip (the IPVV's "content unchanged, positioning changed")
- e IPVV states the core of recognition at three registers, all one move: *content unchanged,
- sitioning changed*. Formalized (from the formal-framework essay), recognition is the operation R that
- anges the self-positioning parameter σ, with the field-content ⟨Sᵢ, Wᵢ, Γᵢ⟩ identical:
- `
- : ⟨Sᵢ, Wᵢ, Γᵢ ; σ₀⟩ → ⟨Sᵢ, Wᵢ, Γᵢ ; σ₁⟩
- `
- ere:
- σ₀ = the self as a thing among things — "an instrument lost among the things of the body and the
- rld" (V1E). The self mis-taken as an object in the field.
- σ₁ = the self as the primary, foregrounded — "the primary thing we see" (V1E). The self as the
- bject, the light in which the field appears.
- What changes:** σ — the self-positioning.
- What does not change:** the tuple ⟨Sᵢ, Wᵢ, Γᵢ⟩ — the field content.
- is is the whole mechanism. Recognition is not the addition of a new object, a new belief, or a new
- ntent; it is the re-positioning of the self within the same field.
3. Why it is a re-cognition ("I was never not," V1D)
- cognition is a re-cognition because the self was never absent. The IPVV's second register (V1D):
"The manifestation of the self is not unprecedented. It does not begin to shine at some moment; it
was always shining. The self is un-cut by all three times: past, present, and future. It did not come
into being, and it will not pass away."
- The argument.** If the self never was absent, then there is nothing for recognition to add — nothing
- uld be added to an eternal self. The "unprecedented manifestation," the appearance of something new,
- only apparent; it rests on the eternal, always-manifested knower. So recognition cannot be an
- tainment; it must be a return — a re-cognition of what was always there.
- The precise mechanism.** The σ-flip is a re-cognition because the content (the field) was always
- ere; only the positioning of the self within it changes. The "re-" marks the identity of the content:
- is the same field, the same self, re-positioned. Recognition re-cognizes — knows again — what was
- ways present but mis-positioned.
4. Why it is felt (the camatkāra, the σ-flip as savouring)
- cognition is felt because the σ-flip — the change from σ₀ to σ₁ — is experienced as a savouring.
- e IPVV's third register (V3P, the lover-union):
"The lover stands near, sought by the slender woman; but as long as he is not recognized, he cannot
be enjoyed. So the world-Lord, always present, always near, is not experienced in his own splendor
until the recognition arises… The single act of recognition turns the un-known nearness into the joy
of union."
- The argument.** The lover is near — the content is present, never absent. What changes with
- cognition is the relation: from un-known nearness to the joy of union. And this change is felt —
- is the joy, the savouring, the camatkāra. The recognition does not bring the lover; it turns the
- ar into the enjoyed.
- Why the change must be felt.** The σ-flip is a change in the self's relation to its field — from the
- lf as a thing (σ₀) to the self as the subject (σ₁). And a change in the self's relation to its world
- s* experienced — it is felt as the shift from the near-but-un-recognized (the "un-known nearness") to
- e near-and-enjoyed (the "joy of union"). The felt is not a side-effect of recognition; it is the
- gister of the σ-flip. Recognition is felt because the re-positioning of the self is a felt event.
5. The mechanism, complete (the three registers as one)
- e three registers of the IPVV are the same mechanism at three levels:
- Register | The σ-flip as... | What changes | What does not |
- ---------|------------------|--------------|---------------|
- Foregrounding (V1E) | a spatial shift | the self from background-instrument to foreground-primary | the field content |
- "I was never not" (V1D) | a temporal-eternal grounding | the self from present-but-un-positioned to present-and-recognized | the field content (and the self, never absent) |
- The lover-union (V3P) | a relational-aesthetic shift | the self from near-but-un-recognized to near-and-enjoyed | the field content (the lover, always near) |
- All three are: content unchanged, positioning changed.** The foregrounding shows it spatially; the
- was never not" grounds it in eternity; the lover-union shows it as felt. This is the mechanism of
- cognition, stated by the IPVV at three registers, and unified by the σ-flip.
6. The felt and the σ-flip: is the joy content?
- e deepest question about the mechanism is whether the felt — the joy of union — is content. If it
- , then recognition adds content (the joy), contradicting "nothing added." If it is not, then what is
- e felt re-cognition?
- The IPVV's resolution (and the audit's precision).* The felt is not an *additional content; it is
- e same content, differently valenced — the same field, the same self, experienced under the σ₁
- sitioning. The joy of union is not a new object added to the field; it is the field experienced when
- e self stands as the subject rather than as a thing among things. The σ-flip changes the valence of
- e field, not its content.
- is is why the tear-apart audit's correction is essential: **recognition removes the identification
- th the finite self-positioning, not the self-positioning itself.** The felt joy is the field
- perienced without the identification of the self as a thing; it is not an addition but a
- -valuation. The felt re-cognition is the σ-flip, and the σ-flip is a change of valence, not of
- ntent.
7. Why this is the "how it works"
- e mechanism essay answers the "how":
- Recognition works because the essence of consciousness is the felt self-grasp (Step 1 of the
- timate proof) — there is something to recognize.
- It works as a re-cognition because the self was never absent (V1D) — there is nothing to add,
- ly to re-position.
- It works as a σ-flip because the change is one of positioning, not content (V1E/V1D/V3P) — the
- me field, the self re-positioned.
- It is felt because the re-positioning of the self is a change in the self's relation to its
- eld, and that change is experienced as the camatkāra, the joy of union (V3P).
- e mechanism is one operation — the σ-flip — with a felt register. Recognition is the felt
- -cognition of the self because it is the σ-flip of the felt self-grasp: the change of the self's
- sitioning within its field, experienced as a savouring. That is the complete mechanism, and it is
- y the thesis is true: recognition works, it is a re-cognition, and it is felt.
8. The boundary
- e mechanism is [T] in the IPVV and complete for the finite field. What it does not establish is
- e universalization — the step from "the field's self re-positions" to "all fields are one self." The
- flip operates on the field's self-grasp; whether all such self-grasps are one is the commitment
- tep 5 of the ultimate proof). The mechanism explains how recognition works for the finite field; it
- es not force the identity of all fields. That is the boundary, and it is the same in every document
- the library.
- his is the mechanism essay. Recognition is a felt re-cognition because it is the σ-flip of the felt
- lf-grasp: the change of the self's positioning (σ₀ → σ₁) within an unchanged field, experienced as
- e camatkāra (the joy of union). The "re-" is grounded in "I was never not" (V1D); the "felt" is the
- gister of the σ-flip (V3P). The mechanism is [T] for the finite field; the universalization is the
- undary.*
