# QUESTIONNAIRE — GROUNDED IN THE REAL QUESTION DNA (from the PUSHING sessions)

*2026-08-12. This corrects the earlier abstraction. The comparative questionnaire is NOT built from
a generic "what is consciousness?" list. It is built from the **real questions the user actually
asked** — the ones in the Logicvids and the 25+ PUSHING-TANTRALOKA / PUSHING-IPVV sessions. Those are
mechanism-gap, crux, and subversion questions, generated empirically by pushing the text, not derived
from a schema. This document anchors the questionnaire in that actual DNA.*

## 1. The correction: what the questions actually ARE

The earlier "CORE-01 What is consciousness?" was my abstraction. The user's real questions are:

- **MECHANISM-GAP** — "Why must prakāśa be accompanied by vimarśa?" (why is manifestation
  self-apprehending at all?). Not "what is manifestation" — the WHY of a necessary link.
- **CRUX / theodicy** — "why does impurity arise? would Śiva choose suffering?" (Q18, dissolved not
  answered). The text is pushed to its hardest moral seam.
- **SUBVERSION** — "Does every cognition know itself?" (logic6). An assumption the tradition relies
  on, attacked.
- **QUANTIFIER** — "How does 'I am not any object' become 'I am the consciousness of every object'?"
  (the universality gap). Where the text asserts a universal from a particular.
- **REGISTER / honest** — "a mother losing her child IS suffering — is Abhinava really saying it's
  just a rasa?" (Q20). Forcing the text to answer the devastating objection honestly.
- **EMOTION-as-root** — "is everything rooted in love? then what is FEAR?" (Q21, Q22). Pushing a
  claimed synthesis to its structural extreme.
- **ROOT-recurrence** — "What is time?" asked repeatedly (logicvid3) until it becomes "is time itself
  a contraction of consciousness?" — the SAME question deepened through the text.

**The questionnaire must preserve these question-SHAPES, not flatten them into "what is X."**

## 2. The empirical seed — the actual master-questions (from PUSHING-TANTRALOKA)

These emerged by pushing the Tantrāloka; they ARE the deep Śaiva questionnaire:

```
Q1   Why must prakāśa be accompanied by vimarśa?          (reflexivity: why is manifestation self-apprehending?)
Q2   Why will, knowledge, action (icchā, jñāna, kriyā)?    (the powers: why three, and how do they relate to the one?)
Q3   Why three upāyas (āṇava, śākta, śāmbhava)?            (the means: why these three routes?)
Q4   Why is recognition the goal, not attainment?          (recognition-not-attainment)
Q5   Is time a real addition?                              (krama-time: time as the self-shaping of the non-temporal into succession)
Q6   The upāyas as reversal — how does apoha (exclusion) unseal the already-present?  (recognition's epistemic mechanism)
Q7   The self as undisclosed object — the two ahams (ego vs pure aham)              (what is the "I" that recognition reveals?)
Q8   The perceiver / universality — why must the non-objectifiable subject be universal?  (the quantifier problem)
Q9/Q11 What is grace? — is it external?                    (grace = the self-apprehension's inward-return, no transfer)
Q10  Is the direction FELT?                               (camatkāra: the inward-turn as felt wonder)
Q12  śānta & mokṣa — the authoritative confirmation (Abhinavabhāratī)               (peace as the felt of liberation)
Q13  How is rasa FELT yet alaukika (beyond time/space)?   (sva-saṁvedana: self-luminous felt)
Q14  What does one actually DO? (the practical ladder)     (reduce drive, polish with rasa, carry into life, let go)
Q15  IPVV kāryakāraṇatāvimarśa vs Tantrāloka — parallels & counters
Q16  Is the difference real even at the Śiva level?        (TĀ 1/73-74: unity-in-difference, NOT absolute monism)
Q17  Where does the real Śiva↔power difference become the māyā impurity?   (the crux)
Q18  THE THEODICY: why does impurity arise?                (dissolved: the play of fullness, nothing really impure)
Q19  At the level of the one, is suffering literally a RASA?
Q20  A mother's grief IS suffering — is it just a rasa?    (the honest answer: two levels of one event)
Q21  If all is rooted in love, what is FEAR?               (fear = love in the mode of threatened loss)
Q22  LOVE AS ROOT — a geometry of the emotions (anger/fear/grief = love transformed)
Q23  How can the four painful emotions be pleasurable?     (the vibhāva move: pleasure relocated to the alaukika tasting)
Q25  Karma, time, freedom                                 (Branch CA)
```

**These are the comparative spine for any Śaiva text** — and crucially, they are *mechanism/crux*
questions, not "what is consciousness?" Each one forces the text to a specific seam.

## 3. The agnostic CORE — grounded in the same DNA, not "what is X"

The CORE layer should ask the same *shapes* in tradition-neutral form — the mechanism-gap, the crux,
the subversion — so a Buddhist or Greek text gets pushed the same way. Rebuilt from the DNA:

```
MECHANISM-GAP (why is X necessarily Y?)
  CORE-M1  Why must the fundamental be self-related (self-apprehending / self-grounding)?
  CORE-M2  Why must cognition be active, not merely receptive? (what does knowing ADD?)
  CORE-M3  Why does the one become the many at all? (what forces differentiation?)
  CORE-M4  Why is there a gap between what the subject is and what it experiences?
CRUX / theodicy (the hardest seam)
  CORE-C1  Why does suffering / error / impurity arise from a ground that is good/whole?
  CORE-C2  Is the tradition's own central example really what it claims? (the mother's-grief test)
SUBVERSION (assumptions attacked)
  CORE-S1  Does every cognition / state know itself? (or is self-knowledge occasional?)
  CORE-S2  Is the subject really universal, or merely the particular it experiences?
QUANTIFIER (the universal-from-particular gap)
  CORE-Q1  How does "I am not X" become "I am the consciousness of all X"?
REGISTER (what is it to experience this?)
  CORE-R1  What is the felt of the teaching? (not just the doctrine — the experience)
  CORE-R2  What does one actually DO? (the practice, not the metaphysics)
ROOT (the same question, repeatedly deepened)
  CORE-RT1 What is time? — asked until it becomes "is time itself X's activity?"
  CORE-RT2 What is the relation between the one and the many? — asked until it becomes a specific mechanism
```

These are **the same question-shapes as the Śaiva sessions**, in neutral form. A Buddhist text gets
the same shapes pushed at its own seams (emptiness, dependent arising); a Greek text at its own
(Being, the One, participation).

---

## 4. How the layers compose (the corrected model)

```
L0  AGNOSTIC CORE  — the DNA shapes (M1-4, C1-2, S1-2, Q1, R1-2, RT1-2), fixed, every text.
L1  TRADITION MODULE — the empirical master-questions (Q1–Q25 Śaiva) for the text's family.
L2  SCHOOL FINE-GRAIN — the single-school register (pratyabhijñā / spanda / kubjikā …).
```

The Śaiva module IS the empirical Q1–Q25 (grown by pushing the Tantrāloka). A Buddhist module would
be grown the same way (push a Buddhist text until its Q1–Qn emerge), not abstracted.

---

## 5. The honest note for the future

The deepest point: **the best questionnaire cannot be written in advance.** It is grown by pushing —
Q5–Q25 were not planned; they emerged as the text revealed tensions (time, grace, theodicy,
mother's-grief). So:

- The **fixed** layers (CORE + the family's *seed* master-questions) provide comparability.
- The **grown** layers (the new branches each text forces) provide penetration.
- A comparative matrix should record BOTH the asked-and-answered AND the newly-forced questions per
  text — because the new-forced questions are where the text is most itself.

This is what "ask every text the same core questions" means correctly: ask the same question-SHAPES
so answers are comparable, but let each text force its own deepest branches.
