# THE FELT-TO-GROUND ARGUMENT
## The transcendental proof of the order-less support in the IPVV — and the precise limit of what it establishes

*2026-08-11. The deepest crux of the recognition-thesis is the felt→ground step: does the felt of one
cognition prove the *one* universal consciousness, or only that the felt exists? For a long time this
essay's project held that the IPVV merely *asserted* the one. This essay shows that is wrong: the IPVV
*argues* the ground, in the saptamo vimarśa, by a transcendental argument (the order-less support, V2O)
confirmed by a causal proof (the one knower of memory, V2P). It reconstructs the argument in full, and
then states its precise limit: it establishes the per-field support, not the numerical identity of all
supports. The gap is narrowed, not closed — and this essay shows exactly where.*

---

## 1. The crux, restated

The challenge (from the honest critique): the felt-is-primary is shared with naturalism; the
universal-ground interpretation — that the felt IS the one consciousness — is an addition, not a
consequence. The felt of one cognition proves the felt exists; it does not prove one universal
consciousness. **Can the IPVV argue the one, or does it only assert it?**

For a long time the answer was thought to be: it asserts it. This essay shows the IPVV *argues* it —
and marks the precise limit of the argument.

---

## 2. The argument: the order-less support (V2O)

The IPVV's strongest argument for the ground is in the saptamo vimarśa (V2O):

> "The *pratibhā* is the flashing — the light that runs through the ordered word-objects, through all
> the varied things we name and know. It is seasoned (rūṣitā) with their order, touched by it. But the
> flashing itself is not ordered. Its support — that in which the flashing flashes, the one who knows
> the order without being caught in it — is the order-less, infinite-consciousness-form knower. And
> that knower... is the great Lord (maheśvara)."

**This is a transcendental argument.** The structure:

1. **The order is given.** The many appearances, the word-objects, the sequence — ordered experience is
   a fact.
2. **Order requires an order-less support.** The pratibhā (the flashing) is "seasoned with their
order, touched by it" — but it is NOT the order. Its support is the order-less knower, "the one who
knows the order without being caught in it."
3. **Therefore every ordered field requires an order-less support.** You cannot have ordered
appearances without the order-less light in which they flash.

**Why this is an argument, not an assertion.** The order is the given; the order-less support is
*derived* from it — required by the very structure of ordered experience. This is the same move as the
time-work: the non-temporal is the source of time; here, the order-less is the source of order. The
pratibhā is touched by the order but is not the order; so its support is the order-less knower. The one
support is not posited arbitrarily; it is required by the structure.

---

## 3. The confirmation: the one knower of memory (V2P)

The transcendental argument gives the order-less support; the causal proof gives it a positive
determination — the knower.

**The anvaya-vyatireka (presence-absence):** "in the one support the dealing of the world is fit,
without it, not." This is a regular Indian causal proof: the support is inferred as the cause of the
fit dealing.

**The memory confirmation (V2P):**
> "In memory, that very self-consciousness is the valid means in the self's birth; in the
> prior-experience-being, it is the proof — that alone, not another."

The argument:
1. Memory does not bring a new thing; it re-grasps what was already grasped. It is of the
   grasped-grasping nature.
2. What shines in the memory is the prior experience itself — the same self-consciousness, the same
   knower, continuing.
3. Therefore memory requires the one knower who remembers — "the valid means is the self-consciousness
   of the one knower."

**The force.** This gives the support a positive content: it is not merely order-less (V2O) but the
*knower* — the one self-consciousness that remembers, that holds the field together across time. The
support is not an abstract ground; it is the knower.

---

## 4. The synthesis: the felt→ground argument, complete

The IPVV's felt→ground argument, completely stated:

1. **Ordered experience requires an order-less support** (V2O) — the transcendental argument. The
flashing is touched by order but is not the order; its support is the order-less knower.
2. **The fit dealing requires the one support** (V2P) — the anvaya-vyatireka. The dealing of the world
is fit with the support, not without it.
3. **Memory requires the one knower** (V2P) — the valid means is the self-consciousness of the one.

This DERIVES the need for an order-less, self-conscious support from the structure of ordered,
memory-bearing experience. **It is a genuine argument, not a bare assertion of the "one light."** The
felt→ground step is better argued in the IPVV than the secondary literature allows.

---

## 5. The precise limit: the per-field support, not the universal

But the argument has a precise limit, and this essay states it exactly.

- **What the argument ESTABLISHES:** that any ordered, memory-bearing cognition REQUIRES an order-less
self-conscious support — a knower who is not caught in the order. This is a strong argument for a
*transcendental* one-support-per-experience (the order-less knower of THIS ordered field).
- **What it does NOT establish:** that the order-less knower of one field is *numerically identical*
with the order-less knower of another field. The argument proves each ordered field requires AN
order-less support; it does not prove ONE order-less support for all fields.

**The gap is narrowed, not closed.** The IPVV moves from "the felt requires an order-less support" (a
transcendental argument) toward "the order-less support is one" (the universality). But the second step
— from each-field-needs-a-support to all-fields-share-one-support — still requires the further move (the
V2C "no counter-correlate" argument). And THAT move, as the reflexion-core essay showed, is argued but
ultimately commits.

---

## 6. The no-counter-correlate (the argument for the unity, V2C)

The IPVV's further move toward the unity is the no-counter-correlate argument (V2C):

- The "I"-grasp is never the object of another cognition (the sārūpya analysis: object-ness requires a
real difference, and awarenesses lack it).
- Therefore there is no internal boundary by which one "I"-grasp could be distinct from another.

**The honest status.** This is an argument for the identity, but it is an argument that commits. The
"no internal boundary" shows the "I"-grasps cannot be *distinguished* internally — but whether that is a
proof of identity or an assertion of it is the same question the argument leaves at the level of
commitment. The no-counter-correlate narrows the gap further; it does not force the conclusion.

---

## 7. The verdict: narrowed, not closed

The felt→ground argument is the deepest single argument in the IPVV, and its honest verdict is:

1. **The IPVV DOES argue the ground.** The transcendental argument (V2O) and the causal proof (V2P)
derive the need for an order-less, self-conscious support from the structure of ordered,
memory-bearing experience. This is a real argument — it does not merely assert the "one light."
2. **But it establishes the per-field support.** The argument proves each field requires an order-less
support; it does not force the numerical identity of all supports.
3. **The universality is the commitment.** The step from "each field needs an order-less support" to
"all fields share one support" is argued (V2C, V2S) but ultimately commits. It is the Śaiva wager.

**The felt→ground step is better argued in the IPVV than I earlier said — the transcendental argument
of the order-less support gives the ground a real derivation. But the universalization remains the
commitment.** This is true of the IPK, the IPVV, and Ratié alike; and it is the point at which the
recognition-thesis passes from consequence to wager.

---

## 8. The boundary, in one sentence

The felt→ground argument proves that recognition requires — and the felt reveals — an order-less,
self-conscious support for each field; whether all such supports are one is the commitment the IPVV
makes and every rival (Ñāṇananda, aperture-inexternalism, the reflexive debate) declines. **The gap is
narrowed, not closed; and the narrowing is the IPVV's genuine achievement.**

---

*This is the felt-to-ground essay. The IPVV argues the ground by a transcendental argument (V2O: the
order-less support of ordered experience) confirmed by a causal proof (V2P: memory requires the one
knower). This derives the need for an order-less self-conscious support from the structure of ordered,
memory-bearing experience — a real argument, not an assertion. But it establishes the per-field
support; the numerical identity of all supports is the commitment. The gap is narrowed, not closed.*
